The annual gymnastics display began life as a ‘girls’
evening’ to display work done by all the girls in the school,
this included a fashion display, catering by the home economics
department and dancing and gymnastics displays. The evenings were
extended to include boys and became known as Ope Evenings. Themed
gymnastic displays have included: War of the Worlds, Oliver, The
Power of Love, Phantom of the Opera and The Lion King.
Members of the gym club had an annual visit to
Lilleshall, the touring centre for the British Gymnastic Teams.
Some of our girls were caught doing cartwheels on the lawn at
three o’clock in the morning ...
The hockey teams also went to Lilleshall for coaching
and several girls over the years were selected to represent the
county. We went on a hockey tour to Jersey – where it snowed,
we lost every game and one girl fell in the swimming pool fully
clothed as soon as we arrived!
