They were sent out from dragon homes to check the surrounding countryside for availability of food.

Gorde asked the dragonscouts to seek out a new, safe homeland for the dragons when knights were hunting them to extinction.

Many dragonscouts were killed by knights, but one did find a suitable new home for the dragons.
