The Sailings of Verrazzano

By Mike, 9

Giovanni Da Verrazzano was one of the best explorers ever. He was born around 1485, in his families castle, near Florence, Italy. When he was about 21 years old, he decided to explore the seas. In 1524, he was sent out by King of France to explore the area between Florida and Newfoundland to look for a route to Asia. The name of the ship was La Dauphine. He sailed to the American coast at North Carolina and then sailed north to Newfoundland. While on his journey he also sailed past New Jersey and the Hudson River. He reported this to the king and gave France its claim to American land. On this journey, he discovered the New York Harbor.

Verrazzano made three more voyages to Americas. On his last journey, in 1528, he was killed by the native Antilles.
In 1909, a monument of Verrazzano was placed in Battery Park, in New York. The monument was moved when they were building the Battery Tunnel in 1952, the Italian Historical Society wanted to give Verrazzano the credit he deserved, so they dedicated the monument again. They were also successful in having April 17 called Verrazzano Day in 1957. Finally, on November 21, 1964, the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge was opened. The Italian Historical Society said, “The Bridge symbolizes the spirit of committing to an idea and following through to the end.” (January 2005)

Hudson's Three Voyages

By James, 9

Henry Hudson was the first one to sail on the Hudson River and he saw the northwest passage after four voyages. He went on a voyage in 1607 and in 1609. In 1609 he found the northwest passage. Henry Hudson went on a ship to find the north west passage with about twenty sailors. Then he went on his journey in 1607 he didn’t find it. Four voyages later he found it. On his voyage in 1609 he thought he was going to give up but he never did.
Then afterwards after his third voyage he went on a another voyage but this time Henry Hudson found the northwest passage! On this voyage he went on the ship the Half Moon because Henry crashed three ships and only had one ship left! Well Henry Hudson did not really own the Half Moon. It was given to him by the Dutch because the Dutch also hired Hudson to find the Northwest Passage. (January 2005)

A Hudson Story

By Maryanna, 9

One morning in England Henry Hudson went to the King and Queen and they asked him to go to a lake and name it in his honor and find the North West Passage. On the way to the North West Passage they saw a lake just like she said. He named it The Hudson River. He was looking for the Northwest Passage again. They finally found it. They told the King and Queen they found it. They were happy and astonished. When they got back some people had broken arms, legs, necks, hips, and hands. Other people did not have any broken arms or anything. It took two voyages to get to the North West Passage. The King and Queen were very happy. Henry was also happy.

It took two voyages to get to the Northwest Passage. Some of the crew had to catch yummy fish. That night they stopped the ship so they could eat their delicious food. They got to an Island and the name of it today is North America. The Native Americans lived in North America. They had to eat fish, too. On the trip there was a thunderstorm by the ocean. The storm got even worse when they were in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. They tried their best, but their ship fell apart and they had to hold on to part of the pieces of the ship. (January 2005)

Dear Diary

By Amber, 9

Henry Hudson went exploring all over the river to find some things. He also found a piece of water. It didn’t have a name so then he named it Hudson River. Henry Hudson was the first explorer who had found a piece of land or water. He named it Hudson Bay.
He was a great explorer when he lived in the country or state. When Henry Hudson was on his ship he was looking all over the river, ocean, bay trying to find a lot of new things to look or to name. When he was looking around on the water, he kept on bumping into people, who know him or wanted to see him on the way.
Henry Hudson had his son on the ship and some other sailors. They had no food, so they had to catch food with a net. (January 2005)

One Famous

By Ryan, 10

Samuel de Champlain was born in 1570. He had sailed on four ships as an explorer, however he crashed three of the ships, and that left Champlain with one ship called the La Dauphine. He went on lots of voyages with this ship, and went on one gung ho voyage in 1603. Besides that Champlain also went on very small trips, and on one of them Champlain made a settlement on a mountain and called it Mt. Desert and made a small community there. The French King also sent Champlain to Africa to capture blacks for slavery. After he captured the slaves Champlain went to his big settlements in northern New York and southern Canada. He sold the slaves for money or as they used to call money “shillings.” Champlain died from a stroke on December 25, 1635. (January 2005)

Verrazano’s Journey

By Danielle, 9

Verrazano was born in Tuscany, Italy about 500 years ago. He was born in 1485 and died in 1528. When he died he was 43 years old and he got eaten by Indians. He made a lot of discoveries. When he sailed the ship he was on was the La Dauphine. Verrazano had a bridge named after him. It was the Verrazano Narrows Bridge. He was the first European to go into New York Bay. He was a really good explorer.
While Verrazano was on his ship there were big waves. He had to sail in one little boat to the other side of the ocean. Everyone was scared and told him to be careful. The water splashed up and hit him right in the face. The water pressure was so hard he almost got knocked right off the boat. When he finally was half way across the ocean the waves slowed down a bit. As he was going the waves slowed down more and more. Then he was just about to reach the end when the waves picked up speed, and knocked him off the boat. The pressure was so bad that he couldn’t get up and he drowned. (January 2005)

From Hudson's Explorer's Notebook

By Amanda, 9

My name is co-Captain Amanda. I am sailing on the Half Moon Ship. The Dutch sent Henry Hudson to search the northwest passage on this ship. OH NO! Someone just shouted a storm is coming. The rain started hailing down. It is putting a lot of pressure on the ship. WATCH OUT! The sail is going to fall. Ahhh! One of the men screamed. CRASH! HELP! HELP! The sail fell on a helpless sailor. The man had two broken legs. He was very mad and helpless. The captain shouted get him down under the ship. The storm was making the ship sway back and forth. I better go help the captain he is getting furious. (January 2005)
