The Last Days

By Jessica, 14

It came like a message from the heavens, as if the almighty God was displeased with the human race. When we first saw it, we thought nothing of it, and went on with our lives. The government could destroy it, that's what made us believe it would never hit. That, and thinking it would never happen. Could never happen. We were wrong.
It took a total of three days to hit. The first day it began as a pinprick in the sky. Very strange, it was, since it was during the day. Most people thought it was a UFO and took photos. The rest ignored it. No one had any idea what it really was.
The second day it was closer. It actually blocked out much of the sun. That day, we figured out what was going on, but didn't think it would hit. We trusted the government, for some odd reason, and continued with our lives. "It won't hit," we told ourselves. "It just can't happen. We can't die that way."
the third day was the worst day in human history. It might have even been the worst day in the history of the Earth. That day, it came through the atmosphere, a colossus chunk of burning rock one kilometer across. It hit the center of China, but the force was so great, Americans could also feel the exact moment it collided. A giant depression was made, sinking almost all of China. Tsunamis as tall as ten to thirty story buildings swept the coasts. Dust and dirt clouded the sky, separating the Earth from the sun. Earthquakes ran rampant throughout the world. That, of course, was the End of civilization.
Plants began to die, for without the sun's energy, they cannot make food. Herbivores starved to death, their carcasses dropping like dead flies. Carnivores wasted away, for they had no food to eat. Only birds, who could fly above the Earthquakes, had a chance. Buzzards thrived by eating the bodies of the dead. Birds of prey, by killing the buzzards, thrives as well. A new food chain had been created.
It took three weeks for the dust to sink back to Earth, for the quakes to end, and the tsunamis to stop. Most mammals are now extinct, except for some sea mammals and the few humans left. All the amphibians are gone, and sponges, which have been around for six hundred million years have all died out. Insects such as mosquitoes and flies, have increased by millions, and are killing off the only human survivors by the diseases they carry. Reptiles only consist of a few snakes and lizards. Fish are still numerous, especially on the sea floor where chemosinthesis is taking place. Most land plants are gone, and kelp is the only remaining sea plant. There is still plankton left, but only in the middle of the oceans.
I don't know who will read this, but I am one of the survivors of judgement day. By count, out of six billion, there is two hundred people left. I lost my parents, my husband, and my children on that fateful day. My friends are gone, and so are my enemies. There is no hope anymore, and I have lost my will to live. I have concluded that our age, the Age of the Mammals, has been completed. It is now time for birds to take over. It's sad, really. All we accomplished, all the human race has achieved was for nothing. Armegeddon has arrieved, and there is no room for humans anymore.
