        Bens, vets, hummer, jets
          By Austin, 14, Grade
8, Chiddix Junior High School, Normal, IL, USAHi! My name is Jake
and I just turned 18. It is year 2075 and I just found the sweetest SUV.
        It's a 2001 Hummer; I bought it for $3,000. I noticed something that I
have not noticed in all the other Hummers that I've been looking at. It
had a little button on the dashboard that said Bad Boy. I looked in the
back and there were three boosters. But when I bought it and I took it out for the first time to see how fast
it went there was a little bit of a problem. I was out on the highway
and I was listening to 196.9 FM hard rock. Whoa! I had it up to
185 and I noticed that everything had been changing. All the views around
        me have
Changed. I was rolling by houses and all of a sudden and it looked like
a house in a picture that my Grandma showed me from a house of the 60's.
I thought was I in the 60's or did I just take a wrong turn? Everybody
was looking at me because I had my stereo cranked up.
I was in a small town and all of a sudden on the radio, James Brown came
        on. It was
R-O-C-K in the USA. But I thought I was listening to that Hard Rock station.
I parked my Hummer and everyone was asking, "Where are you from and what
        are you doing?
"Here? What are you driving? I have never seen that before."
After about 5 minutes, people were coming up and talking to me. I noticed
this kid and asked him a question. I said, "Where am I?" Ron answered,
"You are in North Carolina. Where did you think you were?"
I said, "I don't know, where in North Carolina."
He replied, "Chapel Hill." I asked him where the college was. He said,
"College, there is no college here." I said, "What do you do after High
School?" He said, "Work." I said, "You don't go to college at all?" He
replied, "Yea." Well, we talked for about 10 minutes and I told him that
my name was Jake. I told him I didn't know how long I would be there and
asked him to show me around. He said I could stay at his house.
I found out I was in the year 1969. It had been three days and I found
myself dressing, acting, and talking different. (All because of my new
        friend, Ron.)
I asked Ron about any ladies in town. He took me to a place called Sandy's
drive-in. I met some fine looking ladies there. I asked him what I could
do to help him since he has helped me so much. He said, "You remember,
Heather? I said, "Yea." He said, "I think she's pretty hot." I said, "Wait,
you think she's phat?" He hit me for it. He said, you don't call girls
fat. I said, "No, I wasn't meaning it as FAT; I was meaning it as PHAT."
(Pretty hot and tempting). He asked me to talk to her and see what she
thought about him. I said, "Yea, I could do that."
That next day Ron's mom signed me up for school. I saw Heather that same
        day. I
Was like, "Hey, Heather." She said, "Hey, Jake." I said, you remember,
Ron, right? She goes, "Yea, I know Ron. I said, "What do you think about
him?" She replied stuttering, "I think he's really far out." I said, "Seriously?"
She said, "He's groovy. Jake, you can't tell Ron that." I said, "Okay."
Then I saw Ron and said, "Ron, come here" We were rolling in the Hummer
        and I told
Him exactly everything that Heather said. He said, "Really, Heather likes
me?" I said,"Yea, I think she does." Ron answers, "That's far out. Ya
        that's groovy, right."
It has been one whole month and Ron and Heather have been together. I
was looking at the hummer and the radio was on. I had been working to
try to figure out how I got to the 60s, and it was the boosters and the
radio. When I got on a certain stations. The booster kicked in and we
were off. I told Ron I might try and see if I fixed the Hummer. I told
him too not to tell anyone that I was leaving. Two days later, I was going
to try this out. Ron said, "Wait, can you take me to The Barn?" The Barn
was the place where couples hang out. He said, "Come here." Why? I have
to get going," I replied. I walked in and everyone yelled surprise!!!!
"What's this? No one has thrown me a surprise party before," I responded.
Everyone said goodbye. I told him not to tell anybody that I was trying
to get back and I told his Mom and all of my friend's thanks for letting
me stay. That night at 9:00 I turned on the radio to power 207.5 FM, got
the Hummer up to 185 mph and I was back in the year 2075. I looked at
the time and I wasn't even gone 12 hours.
